(Extract from The Story of Priddy by Alan Thomas)-
"The children of Priddy are extremely lucky in having the opportunity of elementary education since 1854. The building which still serves as the village primary school was erected, largely due to the efforts of the Rev. Henry Tudway, who was curate of Priddy. The Education Act of 1870 made education compulsory between the ages of 5 and 13 and it could be applied at Priddy. But lack of schools and teachers meant that the children in other places had to wait until the Education Act of 1880.
The school was examined for the first time on 23 April 1856 by the Decanal Inspector, the Rev. J H Stephenson of Lympsham. He was very pleased with the children's progress and their orderly and clean appearance which reflected much credit upon Mr Larcombe and Miss Buckley, the master and mistress. On 7 May the Rev. A B Russell and his lady presented several bibles and other suitable books to the most deserving pupils."
